I just can’t get enough of Brian Courtney Wilson’s worship song ‘Worth fighting for’.

I find this worship song so real, so relate-able, motivational and encouraging.

I especially like this ‘One Mic One Take’ version because it’s just Brian and the pianist. No choir as in other versions and you can see his passion as he sings.

As a Christian man, husband and father the lyrics really touch and resonate in my heart.

A place of despair

As a Christian husband and father I strongly relate to the concept (and experience) of God meeting with me in places of despair. I only need remember times past of struggling to be able to feed a household of six on one income (many mouths to feed), a mortgage to pay, a high demanding job (placed by God and learning to lean on His directions), whilst learning to be a father (you never stop learning). Perhaps the greatest challenge of a husband, struggling to learn to relate and love my wife as Christ loved the church (Eph. 5:25-30) – not that I’ve got to the end of that one, it’s a lifelong journey of delight, challenge (🤔 keeping it real 😊) and discovery.

You are God’s child

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21

The song talks of God never leaving us, you are His child and God sees you and me, as worth fighting for. God has and continues to fight for us. In the first instance He gave Himself for us as we have just read and then thereafter by the continuous efforts (daily, hourly, moment by moment) that He makes to help, support and guide us toward the life He has in store for us, the abundant life He spoke of in John 10:10.

One of the greatest truths that has helped me in my Christian walk over these last 20 years is knowing that He never leaves me nor forsakes me…us. (Deuteronomy 31:6,8; Matthew 28:20 and Hebrews 13:5 are but a few scriptural references of this great promise).

Moving by Faith and not by Sight

My brother and sister, we have to learn to stop looking at worldly situations and following what the world says about those situations. Instead let’s walk by faith, seeking God’s view on situations.

If God chooses not to give us the inside track by divine revelation on events then let us simply push on in the truths of His word and chose to believe His promises over our lives and not those of the world – God is not a man that He should lie or that he should speak through His word/promise and not act (paraphrase Numbers 23:19).

Let us remind ourselves of what our Christian faith is actually based on:

“Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].”

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)

The assurance (some versions say substance) of things hoped for, the evidence (the conviction) of the reality of that which is hoped for.

So as I hear Brian sing the line that he is ‘Pressing towards the mark of the calling’ it stirs the faith in me to step towards the calling on my life no matter what things may look like around me.

Sadly, it also causes me to think about the number of marriages that are damaged and sometimes destroyed, when one or both spouses stop pressing towards the mark of the ‘covenant’ calling on their marriages. I think about the families whose destinies are completely changed as a result of broken marriages.

Now before you think Brother Don, is not sounding so ‘brotherly’ or that I’m writing this with a self-imposed halo on my head to accompany my rose tinted glasses that I wear, I can tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. I was born out of wedlock, in foster-care from six months old (with all the baggage that brings) and have four children from my first marriage – yes, I’ve tasted the bitter taste of divorce. I’ve faced levels of destruction in my life.

The line “Though heavy with the weight of my mistakes” has definitely been one I could associate with and in similar vein to the Apostle Paul (“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst” 1 Timothy 1:15), I am not a spotless sheep, but I am a sheep nonetheless, led by the great Shepherd, Jesus. I am very thankful that God has blessed me despite many of the wrong paths I set myself upon. I have a most wonderful wife, who loves my children and also gets on well with my ex-wife. There are so many more blessings that I will share from time-to-time.

The lyric ‘my wife (or husband) and children, my family are worth fighting for’ has to be a call for us to war, to fight for our marriages, our families (and those of people we know and love) against the onslaught, the strategies of the devil, the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world; the mighty powers in the dark world, and evil spirits in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:10-12); whose one aim is to do the following to our marriages, families, communities etc.

“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

John 10:10a

So my encouragement here is that we will press into our faith walk, realise who the real enemy is, humble ourselves and practice living and walking by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:5, Galatians 5:16); in order that the fruit of the Spirit that comes as a result of living this way (Galatians 5:22-23) will manifest itself in our lives and we in turn build strong marriages, families and communities that cannot be easily toppled by the defeated enemy (Satan).
